SUMMARY:Pallikaranai Marsh Land the Pride of Chennai
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nFriday\, February 4\, 2022\nNazareth College of Arts and Science\, Department of Social Work and United Nations Academic Charter commemorated World Wetlands Day at the Pallikaranai Wetland March in Chennai Tamilnadu. Located in suburban Chennai\, the Pallikaranai marsh is among the last remaining natural wetlands of the city. The marsh\, despite being reduced to one-tenth of its original size is one of the most diverse natural habitats in the country. It supports 349 species of flora and fauna including 133 species of birds. The marsh supports over 40\,000 birds at a time during the migratory season and over 5000 birds during the non-migratory season. The students Tryphosa\, Kingsley\, Jubin\, Sajana and Aravind interacted with the public to spread awareness on the importance of conserving Wetlands. The event was spearheaded by the Principal and Head Department of Social work and supported by Mr.Henry Maris. DESCRIPTION:NAZARETH COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCE\, AVADI\, CHENNAI – 600 062\nAffiliated to the University of Madras\nRe-accredited by NAAC with B Grade \nDEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL WORK\n&\nDEPARTMENT OF APPLIED GEOLOGY\, UNIVERSITY OF MADRAS \nRESTORING OUR EARTH TO NORMALCY – A REPORT \n \n \n\nThe Department of Social Work\, the Eco Club\, and NERF of Nazareth College of Arts and Science\, Avadi\, Chennai in collaboration with the Department of Applied Geology\, University of Madras\, Chepauk Campus\, organised a three-day International Conference on Restoring our Earth to Normalcy from 22nd to 24th April 2021.950 participants participated in the conference and about 300 participants registered for the events. \nThe first day programme started with a Prayer Song. Dr.E.Mary Angeline Santhosam\, the Principal\, NCAS\, and Organizing Secretary of the conference delivered the Welcome Address and elaborated on the theme of the conference. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Madras\, Prof. Dr.S.Gowri was the Chief Guest of the day. The Vice Chancellor presented the Inaugural Address. Mr.A.N.Henry Maris\, the Secretary\, NCAS\, delivered the virtual Felicitation Speech. Dr.R.R.Krishnamoorthy\, Professor & Head\, Department of Applied Geology\, University of Madras and Dr. Vaneeta Aggarwal\, Professor & Head\, Department of Management studies and NSS Coordinator\, UNOM were present at the occasion. \nDr.Christopher Guna\, the Senior Research Scientist\, Mahatma Gandhi University\, Kerala\, was the Resource Person of the Session I. He spoke on the topic “Biodiversity for Restoration of Earth.” He elaborated on Planet Earth and its components. The speaker also explained the disturbances to Earth and biodiversity as Earth and its natural systems which are constantly disturbed and ignored due to human greed by altering of natural processes for economic benefits and depending more on the technology than nature and finally loosing the link with nature. The speaker ended up the session with a remarkable quote “the Earth does not belong to us. We belong to the Earth.” \nDr.Nagarajan Ramaswamy\, Professor\, Earth and Planetary Sciences\, Curtin University\, Malaysia\, was the Resource Person of Session II. He spoke on the title “Earth and its Environment.” He explained the mass extinction of varied species on Earth\, human impacts on ecosystem\, and the effects of climatic change. He also emphasised on the health-related issues due to higher temperatures. The speaker highlighted the importance and management of peatland around the globe. \nAfter the presentation there was a Question–Answer session in which both the speakers demystified the doubts of the participants. Mr. M. Jeevan Kishore Kumar\, Asst. Professor\, Department of Social Work\, proposed a vote of thanks. Mr. Pandiyan\, Assistant professor\, Department of English announced the events namely poster making competition on restoring our earth to normalcy and photography competition on beautiful Chennai – theme bio diversity. Virtual treat on bio diversity of Nazareth institution was presented. The conference benefitted the participants much. \nIn the second day conference\, Dr.R.R.Krishnamoorthy\, Associate Professor\, Department of Applied Geology and Director In-charge – UGC – HRD\, University of Madras delivered the Key Note Address. In his address he insisted on Conserving natural Resources and Ecosystem by living perfect harmony with nature. In Session II\, Dr.Ramesh Krishnamurthy\, Professor\, Wild Life Institute of India\, Dehra Dun was invited as the Resource Person. He explained how the population of Tiger was pushed into extinction by illegal poaching. He elaborated on deforestation is one of the major factors in destroying animals. The second day Conference was an Eye opener to all who want to conserve marine wealth and work towards balance of Eco-system that plays pivotal role in restoring earth to Normalcy. The Programme came to an end with Vote of thanks. \nIn the third day conference\, Dr.Vaneeta Aggarwal\, Asst. Prof.\, Department of Management Studies and NSS in-charge\, UNOM\, shared how the Ecosystem is been exploited by the human being\, through various types of pollution. In Session II\, Dr. Venkat Pulla\, Senior Lecturer\, Social Work and Coordinator of the Discipline of Social Work\, Charles Sturt University\, Australia\, gave an International Perspective on Climate Change and its effect. The day ended with valedictory function. \nValediction function began with the Dr.E. Mary Angeline Santhosam\, the Principal\, NCAS\, delivered the Welcome Address. The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Government of Tamilnadu\, Forest Department Dr.Sugatto Dutt was the Chief Guest of the day and he addressed about the conservation of forest and motivated the students to take necessary action to avoid deforestation. \nThere was a Question–Answer session in which both the speakers demystified the doubts of the participants. Ms.E.Mano Rajitham \,The Vice Principal of Nazareth College of Arts and Science\, Head Department of Computer Science\, proposed a vote of thanks. DESCRIPTION:Interaction-management & Parents\nThe college organized an interaction with parents of present 2nd and 3rd years to know their status during the lockdown. Further the parents were also explained about the UGC and MHRD decision regarding exams and also advised to prepare themselves for the online teaching initiative. The parents were ready and requested the management to start classes and also give writing work for their wards. They were also anxious to know when the college will re-open and the process of final exams for their wards. The parents were encouraged to keep their children occupied and be in touch with the department heads for any need. The parents welcomed the initiative of having this interaction to understand their opinion regarding Online teaching.
